6 Steps to Looking Stylish Everyday

One of the top questions I get very often during my image consultations and workshops is 

'how do I look stylish everyday?'

I believe you're a unique, talented and beautiful individual. Like most of my clients, you may lack the tools and the know-how to create an external image that resonates with your awesome inner self. My job as an Image Consultant, Personal Stylish and Lifestyle Coach is to help you create an image that expresses the best of you. I believe that you shine when you know how to dress authentically, expressing your personality.

There is a strong connection between your thoughts, feelings, and physical appearance. Our mind and body are one. How you look does influence how you feel about yourself. When you look good and know it, you feel good about yourself. When you take great care of yourself, you feel great, and this heightens your self-esteem. As a result, you'll feel more confident and radiate beauty inside-out.

Step 1: Get a good haircut.

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of having a great haircut. Your hair is the first thing people notice about you. A hairstyle that frames your face well can instantly enhance your look. This magnifies your personality and natural beauty. 

Always seek advice from a professional hair stylist. A good hair stylist will assess your face shape and lifestyle before assigning your hairdo that they deem suitable. He/she should share hair care tips with you and also teach you how to style your hair. Do remember that we've different hair care needs, hence the routine and haircare products needed to keep our locks healthy would be different for everyone. 

With the right hair hairstyle that complements your face and you'll immediately look more stylish and trendy.

Step 2: Dress to express your personality.

I believe that you don't have to be a fashionista to be stylish. The great Yves Saint Laurent is quoted as saying, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” I couldn’t agree more.

Your clothing is an extension of yourself and having great style means dressing to express the 'true' you. It is important that we dress to honour and respect our identity. When you dress to express your personality and appropriately for the occasion, you instantly radiate confidence because you feel comfortable in your own skin. Bearing in mind that confidence is also a big part of being stylish. 

 

Step 3: Wear clothing of the right fit.

If you have ever attended my image workshop, you would have heard me say this 'It's never about your size. It's about your fit.' When it comes to stylish dressing, putting on the clothing that flatters your body type is key. 

Understanding your body type and knowing what complements you can help you create visual balance and harmony, and these are keys to looking amazing. Knowing how to dress for your particular body shape helps you look your best because it plays up your assets and downplays the areas of your body that you don't necessarily want to draw attention to. 

Getting dressed is a whole lot easier when you know what kind of outfits work best for your shape. Knowing how to dress for your particular body shape is one of the critical factors to look great.

Step 4: Choose colours that empower you.

Do you know that the colours you wear can make a huge difference in how you're perceived by others?

The colours you choose to wear influence you more than you think. Therefore, it is an important task every morning to pick the appropriate outfit for the occasion and make sure the colours you choose work in your favour. It is not as difficult as you think. When you understand the art and science of colours, you can put your look together effortlessly and look amazing all the time.

Some questions to ask when getting dressed for the day:

  1. How are you feeling today?
  2. Do you need to be uplifted?
  3. Do you need a little perk-me-up?
  4. Do you need more energy, say for a presentation or an important meeting?
  5. Are you seeing your clients today?
  6. Do you need to stay calm?
  7. How about having some quiet time?

For #2 & #3, you need some brighter shades to help you light up.
For #4 & #5, you will need some power booster, and wearing your desired dark neutrals would do the job.
As for #6 & #7, embracing light shades will channel the peace that you need.

Colour is an integral element of achieving a polished look, so choose wisely.

Step 5: Develop your personal skincare and makeup regime

Before I go any further, I've a caveat to serve, and that is I don't put on makeup half the time. I only do so when I have meetings to attend, or I've a shoot. I want to be honest, so you don't get a rude shock if we ever get to meet in person.

I believe that taking care of your skin and health is essential to looking great, and of course, these contribute to having great style. I believe that every woman should develop their personal skincare regime. And also, be equipped with basic makeup knowledge.

Trust me on this one. I have conducted many corporate makeup workshops (the most popular being 'Transform Your Day Look to Evening Glamour.'). Makeup, when used right, could transform your look, and it is an instant confidence booster. Very similar to wearing clothing of the right fit, you need to know the features to enhance to elevate your look. 

Step 6: Believe that you're beautiful and you're worth it!

As cliché as it sounds, and as real as it is. Being an Image Consultant for the past 12 years, I've worked with hundreds, if not thousands of women. I can tell you with certainty and conviction that you are already beautiful.

Let's put humility aside for a moment. You are talented, kind and awesome! You deserve to look your best and present the best version of yourself. So, it's time to put away those pessimistic self-limiting thoughts, trash the negative messages that you've been told, because you are more than good enough. You deserve to look fabulous and feel amazing about yourself. This is part of self-care. If you are not taking good care of yourself, physically, mentally and emotionally, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Mastering and elevating your style and loving how you look is a game-changer. You deserve to look fabulous and feel amazing.
